What does the cross inside the heart symbol represent?
The cross inside the heart is the traditional Mercy cross that has been worn by the Sisters of Mercy since the foundation of the Institute in Ireland in 1831.
The white cross within the black signifies the meeting of God’s loving mercy with the misery of mankind—the place of ultimate healing.
The simple heart represents the Sacred Heart of Jesus which bears witness to His tender compassion for all who suffer.
The dedication to the mission of comprehensive health care embraces this view of the need for healing, where possible, of the whole person, body, mind, and soul, and, where not possible, the support and comfort necessary to ensure a peaceful transition through natural death to life everlasting.
