The Sacred Heart Mercy Health Care Clinic (SHMHCC) is a non-profit Michigan corporation founded by the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan.

SHMHCC provides care for the whole person, working to heal those who are suffering from physical, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual woundedness.



Women's Health Issues



Recently, Helen Alvare, JD, Associate Professor of Law at George Mason University, published a widely circulated Open Letter to President Obama, Secretary Sebelius, and Members of Congress referring to “the large body of scholarly research indicating that many forms of contraception have serious side effects [and]… that some forms act at some times to destroy embryos…”

The Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan, are in full support of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), who are engaged in combating a threat on our religious freedom through the "unprecedented intrusion from a government bureau, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)".

As a health care Community, we are offering here, research that demonstrates the other side of the issue of contraception and abortion which includes serious side effects.

For the ordinary person who tries to find citations for scholarly research, the path is very difficult for two reasons.

The mantra of "women's health" has become political and emotional, and in the chaos of this present atmosphere, the ecology of the body of a woman has been neglected.

Women see the normal function of their bodies as a diseased state requiring medication. They no longer are informed about the normalcy of their cycle, and are very distant from their own bodies.

We are attempting to present reseach of side effects of these medications which have been downplayed and often ignored.

Women can really be in charge of their own bodies and do not need medications or unnatural means to make decisions about the use of their bodies.
